YAOUNDÉ – CAMEROON: A NURSERY SCHOOL AND A WOMEN'S PROMOTION CENTRE

A project to provide mothers in need with all-round assistance

WHERE

Since 2003, the Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Mary and Jesus have worked in the district of Ekié, one of the poorest areas in the Cameroonian capital. Despite the many difficulties facing them, three years after their arrival they managed to open a health clinic, which was soon officially recognised by the Ministry of Public Health, becoming a key point of reference for the local inhabitants.

WHY

As well as carrying out an educational role, the nursery school also has a social role, as it enables parents to pursue professional careers. The Women’s Promotion Centre, for its part, aims to offer concrete help to the many women held back by their lack of education but also burdened with the huge responsibility of looking after their families - in the majority of cases, on their own. The goal of the Centre is to give these women, who are often very young, the tools they need to look after their families, teaching them the basics of home economics and hygiene/health education.

PROJECT

The project involves completing the construction of a building whose ground floor will be used as a nursery, and first floor as the Women’s Promotion Centre. Work has already begun but other major operations are still to be carried out: the construction of the top floor, the laying of the floors and railings, the construction of a terrace that can also function as a shelter for the nursery school children on the floor below, the creation of a drainage system to protect the building from rain…

COST

€45,000 is sufficient to complete the construction of the building.
