The Epiphany, awaited above all by children for the festivity in which good witch (Befana) brings gifts, is a very important Christian feast that takes us back to the event of the Three King’s arrival at Bethlehem from the Far East to offer gifts to baby Jesus and to kneel before him.
The Three King’s visit to Jesus makes us understand on this day the importance of gifts. Gold, incense and myrrh were offered to the Lord who became man in a manger in Bethlehem. These are symbols for us of what we can offer the Lord through our love for Him and our brothers.
We can make ourselves gifts for the Lord by filling our lives with love and Christian spirit to give Him the most beautiful gift, our hearts as sons and daughters.
The visit of the Three Kings to baby Jesus makes us also understand the importance of giving ourselves to others, our brothers, underlining that personal egoism, closure brings nothing while opening ourselves to our neighbours brings fruit and creates new ties of love and solidarity.
Giving to others consists in offering ourselves and communicating that we are near, with respect, trust, love, the true values that allow us to grow and feel like a family.
Today, as we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord and gather with our loved ones for this last festivity tied to Christmas, we can demonstrate the importance of giving to our loved ones and friends…not only the gifts that bring such cheer but that are only objects, superficial gifts, but also offering our time, knowing how to listen to those close to us who are a part of our daily lives.
We wish you a joyful festivity and that you too may become signs of Christ’s presence in the world and “gifts” for Him and others!
