Christians are only 6.1% of the population in Tamil Nadu. The majority comprises Hindus (88.1%), while the presence of some extremist groups has often created difficulties, especially to Christian and Catholic minorities. Salesians are present to assist these minorities. In 1984 they formed a Centre for Catechesis and Religious Activities (Deepagam Don Bosco Catechetical Centre) in Madras, where Salesians promote many social activities, evangelisation programmes and Catholic education in rural communities. To these missionaries it does not only mean standing by the weakest and sustaining those who are either pursued or discriminated for their faith - true to the spirit of Don Bosco, Salesians deem a more extensive, cultural and spiritual intervention necessary to influence people and, especially, new generations. Religious differences and the rigid social gap created by the caste system require a practical attitude of solidarity towards the poorer classes, children, youth and poor families. They are the target of various religious training programmes centred on catechesis and social work in villages. These initiatives require € 15,000 to be carried out - workshops, collective meetings – to promote humanitarian initiatives, teach the values of faith and produce books and educational videos. Contribute to change things and share hope in a more human and fraternal community where all individuals of all religions are citizens with equal rights and duties.
