138th MISSIONARY DEPARTURE

Alongside our missionaries leaving for all over the world

On 30 September, the 138th Missionary Departure will be celebrated in the Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice, in Turin. This is a particularly important moment for all Salesians, and above all for those who, on that day, will learn their destination, and will receive, from the Rector Superior, the missionary cross, a symbol of the mission that they are about to begin. With their enthusiasm and energy, these men will prepare to assist the most needy of their brothers, in countries that are torn by famine, war and injustice. Strengthened by faith, they wait joyfully to reach Salesian Houses all over the world, ready to offer their life and help to those who live in need. They will rejoice in their small successes, and will never let themselves be dismayed by defeat, as they are certain that they are always in the benevolent sight of God and Mary. In their choice to become missionaries, they accomplish their greatest desire and their ambition: to give themselves entirely to the weakest and most disadvantaged people. They will no longer be able to decide about their time and their life: others will utilize their energy and their words in order to gain succour, support and real help.

Watching them depart will be a highly emotional moment for their families and for those who have overseen their training. Let us remember them in our prayers and give them our encouragement, thanking them for their gift that is also given to those who remain. We should accept the invitation to reflect on the depth of faith and how it can bring us, in everyday life, that same message of peace and love for our fellow men that induces them to cross continents.
