HAITI… EMERGENCY ONGOING THREE MONTHS AFTER EARTHQUAKE

We listen to the silent screams for help from the Haitian people

SITUATION

Three months have passed since the earthquake the devastated Haiti on 12 January, the poorest and most densely populated country in the Americas and the entire Western hemisphere, with a long history of natural tragedies and political violence behind it. In the space of just a few minutes, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale claimed 220,000 lives, destroyed over 900,000 homes, schools and hospitals, and forced almost 1.5 million people – around 300,000 of which children – to live on the streets or in refugee camps.
The first phase of assistance, focused on saving survivors, sending food and water, and setting up refugee camps, can now said to be over.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE

Thanks to you we have sent:
® 8 containers of water and food (pasta, rice, peas, beans and lentils in cans, white flour, tinned tuna and meat, powdered milk, dry biscuits, jam, seed oil) divided up into family packs;
® over 350 camp tents;
® a number of lorries, essential for transferring humanitarian aid from Santo Domingo to Haiti, and for the subsequent reconstruction phase.
And we plan to continue: plans have been made to send another 4 containers with water, food and tents. Because although the media have ceased to talk about Haiti, the emergency continues…

OBJECTIVES AND PROJECTS

Manage the mid-term needs of all those that have been left with nothing and who are completely dependent on international aid.
Guarantee a constant flow of resources to ensure the continuity of assistance for those in trouble.
Support the missionaries in the field in the difficult job of relaunching educational activities and reconstructing damaged and destroyed buildings.

KEEP HELPING US

We still have a long way to go because, as Rector Major of the Salesians Don Pascual Chávez Villanueva wrote: “Today’s challenge can not only be that of rebuilding the walls of the buildings, houses and churches that were destroyed, but rather that of giving new life to Haiti, reconstructing it on the foundations of a truly humane life where everyone is entitled to rights - all rights – and they are not just a privilege for the few.” (from the Letter by the Rector Major to the Salesians, members of the Salesian Family, and all those close to Don Bosco after its visit to Haiti)
Let’s face this challenge together: help us rebuild Haiti!
